The Prevention Division aims to prevent cancer for all Victorians. This is done through community interventions, mass media, advocacy, training and providing policy advice based on the best available evidence. This involves action to affect individual behaviours and the broader physical and legislative environment to reduce cancer risk. We prioritise health inequalities, especially in relation to Aboriginal people, and in culturally diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

About the role

  • Further develop your legal research experience and academic writing skills and become familiar with tobacco control in a friendly, supportive and professional environment
  • A part time (7–9-day fortnight), fixed term position, ending January 2026
  • Hybrid working environment combining working from home and in the office located on Victoria Parade East Melbourne

About your opportunity

We are seeking a Legal Policy Adviser to provide legal advice to the Quit team, and to assist with updating legal sections of online publication, Tobacco in Australia: Facts and Issues.

Reporting to the Head, Tobacco Control Policy, your role is to:

  • Research and draft submissions, briefing and position papers on tobacco-related legal, regulatory and policy issues for submission to governments, law enforcement agencies and regulators and for use by stakeholders.
  • Develop public education resources such as information sheets/fact sheets and web resources on tobacco-related legal and policy issues.
  • Draft letters to government departments and Ministers on matters of concern or issues identified for potential regulatory or policy change.
  • Provide clear, accurate and timely legal policy input on Quit/CCV’s communications content/output (including web resources, media releases etc).
  • Analyse needs and expectations of stakeholders and work effectively with them to develop regulatory proposals.
  • Update sections of the Tobacco in Australia publication that relate to laws and regulation.

All about you

We are looking for someone who has completed a bachelors (or higher) degree in law with:

  • Excellent legal research skills, with a desire to learn about the field of Tobacco Control. A demonstrated interest in public health and/or social justice would be ideal.
  • Proficiency in EndNote X9 and sound knowledge of Microsoft Office suite—Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated initiative as well as the ability to think creatively and innovatively.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, including the proven ability to meet tight deadlines
